Lummis Fights to Protect Volunteer First Responders

U.S. Representative Cynthia Lummis and a bi-partisan majority of her House colleagues, 410-0, passed H.R. 3979: the Protecting Volunteer Firefighters and Emergency Responders Act of 2014. Volunteer fire departments and other volunteer first responders across the country feared that the Obamacare mandate would force them to close their doors. The mandate requires that businesses provide healthcare for employees working 30 hours a week or more. The bill ensures these critical volunteer services including volunteer firefighters and Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) will not face the breaking costs from Obamacare. The bi-partisan companion bill in the U.S. Senate is S. 1798.

"Wyoming depends heavily on these critical emergency responders that Obamacare threatens," said Rep. Lummis. "For any law to put undue pressure on these volunteers and their departments is unconscionable and unacceptable. We need to support these first responders and their volunteer work which contributes so much to the safety of our communities. I am pleased we could do this targeted legislation to help these volunteer responders and we will continue fighting to repeal Obamacare."
