Roby: Obama Budget Proposal Out-Of-Touch with Reality

U.S. Representative Martha Roby (R-AL) today reacted to the release of President Barack Obama's proposed budget for fiscal year 2015, saying what the president submitted is "completely out-of-touch with reality."

The president's budget proposal would increase spending by $791 billion, break spending caps set by the recently-enacted Bipartisan Budget Act of 2013, and impose a $1.8 trillion tax hike. It's a good thing the president's budget is just a proposal, Rep. Roby said, because the radical plan has no chance of becoming law.

"The budget President Obama put forward today is completely out-of-touch with reality, " Rep. Roby said. "It seems the president is more concerned about pleasing his liberal political base than he is about governing. Why else would he propose a budget that never balances and breaks the spending levels agreed upon by Republicans and Democrats in Congress?"

As a new member of the House Committee on Appropriations, Rep. Roby will play an active role in examining the president's budget request and appropriating federal funds.

"For the first time since I was elected to Congress, we will operate under what is known as "regular order,' meaning Congress can reclaim its constitutional 'power of the purse.' As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, I look forward to doing everything I can to enforce our spending caps, rooting out government waste, and ensuring federal spending is in line with our national priorities.

"I am increasingly concerned about the president's failure to recognize the need to address mandatory spending. It is widely understood that unrestrained growth of mandatory spending programs threatens our ability to fund other national priorities, particularly defense. At a time when global tensions are rising, I hope Americans understand the risk we take in gutting the military in order to fund social programs."
