Issue Position: Commitment to Women

Issue Position

PAT MURPHY
"One of the best ways to strengthen our middle class is to pay women equal wages for equal work
and ensure women and their families remain in control of personal decisions on health care. Women
deserve to be afforded full equality in this country and I'll fight to make sure they have it."
-- Pat Murphy20

A PROVEN RECORD FOR IOWA WOMEN
In the Iowa House, Pat voted against legislation that would have banned abortions after 20 weeks, voted
to prohibit anyone convicted of domestic abuse or under a restraining order from purchasing or owning
guns, and voted to require gender equity in political appointments to local boards, commissions and
committees. As Speaker, Pat appointed more women to leadership positions than any previous House
leader.

FIGHTING FOR EQUAL PAY
The first bill Pat passed as Speaker of the Iowa House raised Iowa's minimum wage to give middle-class
families a better chance to provide for their families. In Congress, Pat will fight to pass the Paycheck
Fairness Act so working women are paid on par with their male counterparts, closing an average annual
income gap of $11,048 so families are better able to make ends meet and save for retirement.

PUTTING WOMEN IN CONTROL OF THEIR HEALTH CARE DECISIONS
Pat is a strong advocate for a woman's right to make her own health care decisions and voted against
legislation to ban abortions in the Iowa House. In Congress, he will stand up to right-wing radicals who
invent misleading facts in order to restrict access to women's health care and support efforts to expand
preventive care such as mammograms and ovarian cancer screenings.

WORKING TO END VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN
In the Iowa House, Pat voted to ban anyone convicted of domestic abuse from purchasing or owning
a gun. In Congress, he'll work to strengthen the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) so local law
enforcement has the resources they need to keep women and their families safe.

CRACKING DOWN ON SEXUAL ASSAULT IN THE MILITARY
Pat is a strong supporter of legislation in Congress that combats sexual assault in the military by
removing the authority of commanding officers to change or dismiss convictions and requiring the
dismissal or dishonorable discharge of any servicemember found guilty of committing a sexual offense.
