WASHINGTON -- This morning, Congressman Paul Tonko (NY-20) hosted Margaret Brennan from the Niskayuna Community Action Program (N-CAP), to present innovative prevention efforts for youth substance abuse to an audience at a briefing in Washington, D.C. Brennan joined Tonko to highlight the need for early action on addiction to provide Capital Region youth the greatest possible opportunity for a healthy and successful life.

"I was proud to hear Margaret share N-CAP's work in the Capital Region," said Tonko. "To ensure a bright and productive future for our students, it is critical to educate families on the dangers of substance abuse as well as the benefits of focusing early on a healthy life. I am very grateful that we had the opportunity to hear Margret share N-CAP's mission and her hands-on experience with policymakers here in D.C. I hope we can apply these lessons learned in a meaningful way."

Brennan's presentation detailed specific N-CAP responses to community concerns regarding youth suicide, specifically after four instances of youth suicide were committed by one class at an area high school. This profoundly painful experience laid the foundation for change and the organization built off previous successes to help Capital Region youth work with their parents and teachers to live happier and healthier lives.

N-CAP is a volunteer organization that works to enrich the Niskayuna Central School District and the Town of Niskayuna. Last September, the organization was awarded a $125,000 Drug-Free Communities Support grant by the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy. With the aid of this grant, N-CAP is working to strengthen community collaboration to prevent youth substance abuse.
