Chabot Statement on Violence in Cambodia

Following the violent suppression of protests in Cambodia over the weekend, Rep. Steve Chabot, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific, released the following statement:

"The crackdown on protests in Cambodia over this past weekend illustrate the type injustices being committed by the red-stained hands of the ruling party and its long-time dictator, Hun Sen.

It is a tragedy that the people of Cambodia are subject to this never-ending cycle of government corruption, abuse, and lies. Hun Sen's decision, to turn peaceful protests into a slaughter, by ordering military and police to fire on innocent protestors, must be condemned.

Opposition leaders, including Sam Rainsy and Kem Sohka, should not be forced into hiding for fear of their lives and the lives of their families.

It is time for Hun Sen to step down, so that the people of Cambodia can look toward a brighter future."
