Williams' Statement on the Ryan/Murray Budget

Statement

Date: Dec. 12, 2013

Congressman Roger Williams (TX-25) issued the following statement after voting for the Ryan/Murray budget deal which passed the House on a bipartisan vote on 332-94.

"This budget is a solid step in the right direction for getting America's economy back on track. As a business owner of 42 years and a member of the Budget Committee, I understand the need for a budget -- whether it's for a family, a business or the federal government. While reading through the bill, I asked myself several things: Does this help protect our military that has already been unfairly used as a bargaining chip in several budgeting battles this year? Does this reduce the national debt? Does this reduce mandatory spending?

"This budget framework puts over $31 billion back in the military. It saves $23 billion over 10 years by replacing one-time spending cuts with smarter reforms to mandatory spending programs that will produce real, lasting savings. It requires enactment of several budget-savings provisions within mandatory spending. And it doesn't raise taxes.

"Washington's spending addiction has placed taxpayers, business owners, and future generations on an unsustainable course. As a life-long fiscal conservative, I will always fight for spending cuts, deficit reduction, and smaller government, and I will never allow our national security, or the men and women who serve on the frontlines, to suffer the consequences of Washington's fiscal problems. While not perfect, this bill is a positive move that will get us back to regular order of passing appropriations bills and making the tough, but responsible, decisions that have been postponed for several years."
