Rep. Paul Cook on Implementation of the Iran Nuclear Deal

Press Release

Issues: Foreign Affairs

Earlier today, Rep. Paul Cook (R-Apple Valley) participated in a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing on the implementation of the Iran nuclear deal. At the hearing, committee members expressed serious concerns about the Obama Administration's proposed nuclear weapons deal with Iran. Several experts, testifying before the committee, criticized the agreement for lifting sanctions too early and predicted that a failure to tighten sanctions would likely lead to a nuclear Iran.

Following the hearing, Rep. Cook released the following statement:

"Despite the announcement of a nuclear deal with President Obama, Iran's leaders have made clear that they will never voluntarily dismantle their nuclear program. President Rouhani has actually worsened Iran's radical behavior at home and abroad during the six months since he took office. Tehran has increased its repression domestically, while its support for terrorism abroad has expanded. Additionally, the Rouhani Administration has deepened its support for the Assad regime in Syria, despite its use of chemical weapons against its own people. The United States needs to take a hard line and be ready to impose crippling sanctions on the terrorist regime in Tehran if negotiations fail. Iran is the world's leading sponsor of terror and the greatest proliferation threat facing the world. President Obama needs to reject any agreement that fails to fully, verifiably, and permanently dismantle Iran's entire nuclear enrichment program.

"President Obama needs to rethink his strategy towards Iran. Clearly, his approach isn't working and is putting the world's most dangerous weapons in the hands of our enemy. It's time for Senator Reid and the Senate to join the House in tightening sanctions by passing H.R. 850, the Nuclear Iran Prevention Act."
