Senator Tim Scott Responds to the State of the Union Address

Statement

Location: Washington, DC

Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) released the following statement in response to the President's Sate of the Union Address:

"What we heard tonight from the President were simply more prescriptions for "big government to the rescue.' We've seen over the course of the last 50 years that simply doesn't work. We need to fundamentally change our strategies moving forward to help the most vulnerable among us. Folks who are struggling don't want a handout -- they want a hand up.

Instead of pouring more federal money into education, let's expand choice and put decision-making back in the hands of parents and teachers. Instead of making it harder for small businesses and their employees to grow and prosper, let's make sure our tax code and regulatory system create the right environment for growth.

I will work with anyone else committed to building a better future to develop bold ideas that break away from our past failures. I hope the President and my Democratic colleagues will take a step back and remember what we know to be true -- that success is created in studio apartments and garages, at kitchen tables, and in classrooms across the nation, not in government conference rooms in Washington."
