House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the cease-fire in South Sudan:

"Today's cease-fire in South Sudan is an important step. All parties now need to end the violence that has plagued the country over the past weeks. Having traveled to Juba in 2007, I have seen firsthand the humanitarian, political, and economic challenges the South Sudanese face as they work to build their new country - but I also saw the promise and yearning that were a force for the nation's independence and now ought to be made a force for its success. I will continue to monitor developments closely in South Sudan and work with the administration, humanitarian groups, and other stakeholders to help the South Sudanese build a nation based on the rule of law and committed to advancing the well being of all its people."
