Governor Enlists 'Rainbow Warrior' Spirit in Support of the Philippines

Gov. Neil Abercrombie is calling on Hawaii to show its Rainbow Warrior spirit in support of Philippines relief efforts following Typhoon Haiyan.

Today, the Governor joined representatives of the University of Hawaii and the local Filipino community to announce that every ticket sold for the UH vs. Army home game on Nov. 30 will be matched by a $5 donation to the "Filipino Community Center -- Aloha for Philippines" fund, with a maximum donation of $20,000. The commitment applies to every ticket sold beginning today and up until game time, and is made possible by the generosity of UH supporters who asked to remain anonymous.

"We are encouraging UH fans to bring their friends and family to the Rainbow Warriors' final football home game of the season to boost attendance in order to help those impacted by Super Typhoon Haiyan," Gov. Abercrombie said. "Hawaii and the Philippines share a special bond of friendship and partnership, and this event provides an opportunity to show our kokua."

"We certainly appreciate this collaborative effort to provide support for the Philippines, while also helping boost attendance for our Military and Senior Night football game against Army," said Ben Jay, UH athletics director. "In addition to receiving 50 percent off all available seats, fans can feel good about the fact that their ticket purchase will lead to a $5 donation to the "Aloha for the Philippines' fund. Mahalo to everyone involved with making this wonderful initiative a reality."

"At this time, the best way for people to help is through monetary donations to relief and charitable organizations working directly with affected populations; even very small cash donations make a significant difference to families rebuilding their lives," said FilCom Center Chairman Edmund Aczon.
