Slaughter and DeGette, Co-Chairs Of Pro-Choice Caucus, Issue Statement on Texas Abortion Law Ruled Unconstitutional

Statement

Date: Oct. 28, 2013
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Reproduction

Today, Representatives Louise M. Slaughter (D-NY), Ranking Member of the Rules Committee, and Diana DeGette (D-CO) released the following statement on behalf of the Pro-Choice Caucus regarding U.S. District Judge Lee Yaekel's ruling that Texas House Bill 2 violates the Constitution. The bill gained notoriety earlier this year for its extreme limits on a woman's constitutional right to choose and provoked a 13-hour filibuster by Texas State Senator Wendy Davis.

"We applaud Judge Yaekel's ruling that the draconian limits on a woman's constitutional right to choose enacted this year in Texas are unconstitutional," said Reps. Slaughter and DeGette. "The American people want their leaders to focus on creating jobs and moving our economy forward, but some in government continue to move our nation backwards by crusading against women's reproductive health rights. It's time to stop trying to take away women's health care rights and start working on solutions to the pressing issues facing our communities."
