Maloney Statement on Passage of Bipartisan Plan to Open Government and Avoid Default

Press Release

Date: Oct. 16, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Representative Sean Patrick Maloney strongly supported the bipartisan Senate deal to finally end the government shutdown and budget crisis which passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 285-144. Although it was opposed by the majority of House Republicans, this deal would deliver back-pay to furloughed federal workers, require income verification for people seeking health-insurance subsidies under the Affordable Care Act and avert Tea Party's threat of the nation's first-ever default on U.S. debt. In addition, this bill would ensure that Members of Congress do not receive a pay increase next year.

"I strongly support this bipartisan deal to end the Tea Party standoff, bring folks back to work, pay our bills and start addressing our long-term budget issues. Although I am happy that a reasonable bipartisan solution finally prevailed, there is little reason to celebrate the Washington dysfunction that caused an unnecessary shutdown and a manufactured economic crisis. My neighbors in the Hudson Valley should never again be forced to pay the price for a reckless and irresponsible crisis created by a handful of Tea Party extremists," said Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney.
