O'Rourke Signs Petition to Reopen the Entire Federal Government

Statement

Date: Oct. 12, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Today I signed a petition to reopen the entire federal government. Under a congressional procedure known as a discharge petition, a majority of members can bypass the Speaker and force an up or down vote on a bill.

The petition I signed would allow a vote on the Senate passed government funding bill that would reopen the whole federal government. A majority of members of the House are on the record in support of the measure and if it passed it would go straight to the President who has said he would sign it.

Although I am encouraged by ongoing negotiations to reopen the government and avoid a default, the fastest way to end the current shutdown that is hurting thousands of El Pasoans is to simply pass the funding bill that has already cleared the Senate.
