Swalwell Slams Reckless Antics of Tea Party Anarchists

Statement

Date: Sept. 29, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Representative Eric Swalwell (CA-15) released the following statement after voting against the Tea Party's stand-off to either undermine health reform or force a government shutdown:

"This crisis is a time for leadership, and today Speaker Boehner folded to his Tea Party caucus as they doubled down on their efforts to force a government shutdown. Because of their partisan tactics we're inching closer to a crisis that will deny Americans basic services and cost taxpayers millions of dollars each day.

"The Affordable Care Act is the law of the land. Despite Tea Party tantrums and misinformation, my constituents in the East Bay and Americans from across the country can start signing-up for health plans on Tuesday.

"I've worked in the past few months to find appropriate fixes to the health care law, and I'm committed to improving it. But, I refuse to participate in this hostage negotiation demanded by the Tea Party.

"Americans are rightfully tired of these manufactured crises. They deserve better than political stunts and governing by crisis; at the very least they deserve a functioning government. I urge Republicans to separate themselves from the Tea Party and do what's right for the American people."
