Kuster Statement On Partisan Proposal To Shut Down the Government

Statement

Date: Sept. 20, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Annie Kuster (NH-02) released the following statement tonight after voting against a partisan proposal to shut down the government.

"By refusing to vote on the Senate-passed bill to keep the government open, House Republicans are choosing to shut down the government -- plain and simple. This is not what responsible governing looks like. With a costly shutdown just two days away, we don't have time for more pointless political theater. We need to pass a responsible bill that will keep our government running, our economy growing, and our families and businesses secure. My colleagues across the aisle need to stop putting ideology ahead of common sense and focus on having a rational debate about how to responsibly reduce the deficit, create jobs, and strengthen the middle class. The last thing our economy can afford right now is another manufactured crisis from Washington."

Tonight, Kuster voted for and helped pass the Pay Our Military Act, legislation to ensure that members of the Armed Forces continue to receive their paychecks in the event of a government shutdown.

Last week, Kuster called on House leadership from both parties to bring members of the freshman class to the negotiating table to help reach a reasonable solution to keep the government running. She also urged President Obama to deem certain Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) employees as "essential" to ensure that in the event of a shutdown, our government can keep its promises to our nation's veterans.
