Meadows Asks House Democrats to Support Veterans and National Parks

Statement

Date: Oct. 2, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Representative Mark Meadows (NC-11) released the following statement after a majority of House Democrats voted against funding measures for the Department of Veterans' Affairs and the National Park Service.

"In a continued act of partisan stalemating, a majority of House Democrats voted yesterday against funding for veterans services and national parks," Meadows said. "The veterans who have sacrificed for our nation cannot be abandoned due to Washington dysfunction, especially since the House and Senate already voted to ensure pay for active military is not interrupted. Our national parks serve as economic lifelines for many areas of the country, including the 11th District, and need to be open to the public.

"Today, the House is reintroducing legislation to restore funding to these crucial agencies as well as our National Guard and National Institutes of Health. My Republican colleagues and I are calling on House Democrats to work with us in a bipartisan way to minimize the negative impacts of this shutdown. We will continue to introduce additional appropriations bills to fund key parts of the federal government until we are able to get it fully reopened for the American people."
