Coble Statement on CR Funding Battle

Date: Sept. 27, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Following a 54-44 Senate vote to approve a new short-term spending bill to keep the government funded, U.S. Rep. Howard Coble (R-NC) issued the following statement:

"While it was not unexpected, I am still disappointed that the Senate voted to pass a short-term continuing resolution (CR) that does not defund Obamacare, or as I like to call it, the Un-Affordable Care Act. The House passed a longer CR that maintained federal spending at current reduced levels until December, while stripping out funding for Obamacare.

"My constituents have told me in large numbers that they want either a one-year delay in Obamacare or complete defunding of this government overhaul of our health care system. We have two train wrecks approaching on October 1. We face the start of the new Fiscal Year without a budget in place and the unveiling of the first phase of Obamacare. It makes sense to me that we pass a CR that either delays Obamacare funding for a year or strips it out completely.

"So, now we House Republicans go back to the drawing board. We will meet Saturday at noon to map out our newest approach. I hope that we hold firm on a CR that keeps the government running on October 1 at the current reduced levels and eliminates Obamacare either for a year or permanently."
