Levin, Stabenow Welcome Award to Advance Technologies for Transportation Fuels

Michigan Sens. Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow welcomed the announcement that the Department of Energy's Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) awarded the University of Michigan a $3 million grant to develop a more efficient and cost effective approach for transforming natural gas to a liquid fuel.

"We need to transform the way we use and produce energy in our country, and Michigan's businesses and universities have been on the cutting edge of those research efforts," Levin said. "This funding will be a huge support for U of M's work to convert natural gas to liquid fuel in an efficient and cost-effective way."

"When we grow things here and make things here, we create jobs in Michigan," said Stabenow. "This award will help the University of Michigan continue its leadership in next-generation biofuel research. It is critical that we develop these technologies at home so we can create the jobs of the future in Michigan."

Funding for the project comes from DOE's Reducing Emissions using Methanotrophic Organisms for Transportation Energy (REMOTE) program. The program's goal is to develop cost-effective ways to convert gas to liquid, and then use that natural gas for transportation with reduced emissions.

The Advanced Research Projects Agency--Energy (ARPA-E) was authorized by the America COMPETES Act to help spur development of energy technologies.
