Enzi Welcomes Iraqi Citizens to a New World

U.S. Senator Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., said the success of the Jan. 30 election in Iraq shows that the seed of freedom in that country is beginning to take root.

"Brave Iraqi soldiers and civilians risked their lives to participate in their fledgling democracy, in some ways not unlike brave Americans did more than 200 years ago," said Enzi. "Iraqis went to the polls despite the warning of violence and they continued to vote even when violence occurred. It was a historic day as the Iraqi people set an example for the rest of the world. They voted for the promise of freedom and the future of their own nation, a future that is their own to make. Their participation showed appreciation to all the American and coalition forces who made it possible."

Enzi said the world should be proud of Sunday's election and should continue to work together as Iraq continues to walk the often difficult path toward democracy.
