Rep. Andrews Announces $50k Federal Grant to Improve Math and Reading Skills for Glassboro Students with Disabilities

Wednesday, Congressman Andrews announced that a $50,000 federal grant has been awarded to Glassboro Intermediate School to give a much needed boost to their literacy and math skills programs for students with disabilities. The federal grant was awarded by the U.S. Department of Education as part of the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Congressman Andrews strongly supported the funding in Congress.

The IDEA grant program allows the New Jersey Department of Education to decide how the funding will be allocated to assist students with disabilities. Glassboro Intermediate School's recent academic scores helped officials determine the school's additional needs in order to properly support their students and bring them up to the academic performance level of some of New Jersey's other public schools. These federal funds will help provide for new classroom programs, new reading materials and technology for students, and professional development for teachers and training for parents.

"Education has got to be a priority if we are to secure a prosperous future for our children and our nation in today's global economy," said Congressman Andrews. "This federal grant to Glassboro is providing the necessary support to help our students stay competitive and have a brighter future than they might otherwise have."

Statewide, 19 schools have received one million dollars in grants to improve literacy and math skills for students with disabilities. As a member of the Education and the Workforce Committee in Congress, Representative Andrews is a strong voice in Washington for maintaining a high level of education for the children of South Jersey.
