U.S. Rep. Ron Barber's Statement on Syria

Statement

Date: Aug. 30, 2013
Location: Tucson, AZ
Issues: Defense

U.S. Rep. Ron Barber today issued the following statement on Syria:

"I am deeply concerned about intelligence reports the Syrian government has used chemical weapons against their own citizens -- including women and children. This brutal attack on civilians is unconscionable. The use of chemical weapons cannot be tolerated.

"As intelligence information continues to come forward, I call on the president to openly and transparently communicate with Congress and the American people the threats that have been identified and the rationale for military action. At this point, however, my colleagues and I have not received full information about the Syrian regime's actions, the response options available to us and the full risk assessment associated with those options. Congress must be fully briefed and fully engaged on this matter. We must hear more from the president. The American people deserve transparency and caution as we work to respond to these horrific acts."
