Rolls-Royce officials, after unveiling a newly expanded Moon Township facility on Tuesday, said they plan to hire an additional 40 employees to their nuclear consulting company.

U.S. Rep. Tim Murphy, R-18, Upper St. Clair Township, toured the former PKMJ Technical Services headquarters, which Rolls-Royce's nuclear business acquired in January. The company, which is not affiliated with the vehicle brand, recently completed a 5,200-square-foot expansion of the space, located on Rouser Road off Thorn Run Road Extension.

Murphy said Rolls-Royce brings an "extremely prestigious" name to the region, along with local jobs and growth for the area.

"This is the birthplace of the nuclear energy industry," Murphy said. "And to have Rolls-Royce now come in and say, you know, "We recognize that Pittsburgh has the supreme level of skill and performance here,' it's one of those things we oftentimes overlook, but … it tells us that the next generation, those people who are heading to school now and wondering "What career should I pursue?' Those things -- electrical, mechanical, nuclear engineering -- offer incredible opportunities."

Paul Tobin, executive vice president of engineering nuclear services for Rolls-Royce, said the company currently employs about 225 people, and plans to hire new employees across all of its departments.

"We try to recruit locally, locally from the schools in the area or anywhere," Tobin said. "People that are here in Pittsburgh that want to stay in Pittsburgh, we want to try to find a home for them."

Rolls-Royce's Moon operation provides software and engineering support for nuclear power utility customers, serving 170 nuclear power plants worldwide, including the Beaver Valley Nuclear Power Station in Shippingport, according to Tobin.

"It's a great company and we will now, being part of Rolls-Royce, being able to bring all that extra work to the region -- customers in the (United Kingdom), customers in Europe -- that the work will be done here in western Pennsylvania I think is very positive," said Tobin, who formerly served as PKMJ's president before the acquisition.
