Nunnelee: Mandate Delays are About Fairness

Statement

The House of Representatives today passed two bills addressing the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The first, the Authority for Mandate Delay Act, would delay for one year the requirement that businesses that employ more than 50 full time workers provide comprehensive health insurance or face steep new taxes. The President has already announced the Administration would delay this employer mandate, though it is unclear if he has the authority to do so absent legislative action.

"The President believes he can pick and choose which parts of the law he wants to enforce. Our bill makes it clear we disapprove of his method but support sparing large employers from the job killing effects of his health care law," Nunnelee said.

The second bill, the Fairness for American Families Act, would delay for one year the requirement that individuals purchase approved health coverage or be taxed.

"Delaying the individual mandate is a matter of basic fairness: big businesses should not get a better deal than small businesses, families, and individuals. Implementation of the President's health care takeover is a train wreck all Americans should be spared from enduring," Nunnelee said.
