July 19, 2013 -- Congressman José E. Serrano was awarded a "Friend of the National Parks Award" this week for his 100% support of the National Parks through votes in the House of Representatives in the 112th Congress.

A 100% rating was only earned by a handful of Members. The awards were given by the National Park Conservation Association, a non-profit group that seeks to support and bolster National Parks and the National Park Service.

"I was very honored to receive this recognition for my support of the National Parks during the last Congress," said Congressman Serrano. "To me, these votes are easy. I feel strongly that we must preserve, protect and expand our National Park system so that they can be enjoyed today and in the future.

"Our National Park system was the first ever created, and remains the world's best. It was given to us by our parents and grandparents, and in turn it falls on us to pass it on to generations to come--intact and enhanced.

"So many millions of individuals and families use our National Parks for leisure and for learning that it should not be controversial to give National Parks our full support. I thank the National Parks Conservation Association for this award, and also applaud them for all they do in support of this network of national treasures. "

According to the NPCA, its ""Friend of the National Parks Award' was established in 1999 to track and publicize congressional members' votes on significant park issues. This year, NPCA compiled votes for seven national park-related bills in the House."
