Congressman Elijah E. Cummings, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, issued the following statement in response to the appointments of The Honorable Mary Ellen Barbera and The Honorable Shirley M. Watts to the Maryland Court of Appeals:

"I commend Governor O'Malley on his decision to appoint The Honorable Mary Ellen Barbera as Maryland's first woman Chief Judge of the Maryland Court of Appeals and The Honorable Shirley M. Watts to the Sixth Appellate Judicial Circuit on the Court of Appeals. In addition to making history, these selections reaffirm the state's commitment to protecting and pursuing justice for all Marylanders and generations yet unborn. Both The Honorable Mary Ellen Barbera and The Honorable Shirley Watts have my full support and I commend them for achieving such great honors."
