Issa Mistakes Oversight Committee Hearing for Kangaroo Court

Statement

Date: June 28, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Today U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright released the following statement following the Oversight and Government Reform's Business Meeting to consider a motion or resolution concerning whether Lois Lerner, the Director of Exempt Organizations at the Internal Revenue Service, waived her Fifth Amendment privilege against self-incrimination when she made a statement at the Committee hearing on May 22, 2013:

"Today's hearing, run by Committee Chairman Darrel Issa, is unfortunately a perfect example of what the American people have come to expect from this committee. Denying members the right to speak and interrupting statements from Democratic members, due to a disagreement with their presentation of the facts, is shameful. If this committee was provided with rules regarding the 5th Amendment process in regards to Ms. Lerner, and if Chairman Issa were able to follow the committee rules himself, today's meeting would have served a purpose. Instead, Chairman Issa decided to run this committee like a kangaroo court.

"I urge the Chairman to further manage this committee with proper rule and respect, and to work on behalf of the American people, not in furtherance of personal political goals."
