Rep. Swalwell Calls on House Republican Leadership to Follow the Senate's Lead and Pass Comprehensive Immigration Reform

After the Senate's passage of a comprehensive immigration reform bill, U.S. Representative Eric Swalwell (CA-15) released the following statement calling on House leadership to promptly bring up a comprehensive immigration reform bill for a vote:

"Today the Senate brought comprehensive immigration reform one step closer to reality. Our immigration system is broken and overdue for reform. It keeps families apart. It forces hard-working people in the shadows. It encourages talented people to leave our country. We can do better. We must do better.

"The Senate immigration bill is not perfect, but most importantly it recognizes that reform must be comprehensive. Regrettably, House Republican leadership has suggested a piecemeal approach. I sent a letter to Speaker John Boehner urging a comprehensive bill that provides a pathway to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented immigrants currently living in the shadows of our country, reunites families, secures our borders and allows high-skilled workers educated in the U.S. to stay here, innovate here, and contribute to our economy.

"The time is now to update our immigration system so that it reflects the needs of the 21st century. It makes economic sense, and it's the right thing to do for our communities."
