Senator Dan Coats (R-Ind.) today voted in a Senate Appropriations Committee markup to establish federal spending caps consistent with current law, as set in the Budget Control Act (BCA) of 2011. Democrats on the committee rejected this cap and instead voted to spend an additional $91 billion above the levels that will be available in the next fiscal year.

"I joined the Appropriations Committee to set fiscal priorities, cut spending and separate the essential programs from the non-essential ones," said Coats. "I will not support spending caps that ignore the financial realities facing our country. Therefore, I will vote against all bills that are based on budget allocations that exceed the levels agreed to in the Budget Control Act. The Senate needs to get serious about addressing our debt and deficit, abide by the laws it enacts and stop playing games to avoid hard fiscal decisions."
