Date: June 11, 2013
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Energy

Today, H.R. 251, the South Utah Valley Electric Conveyance Act, legislation sponsored by Congressman Jason Chaffetz, passed the House by a bipartisan vote of 404 - 0. This bill would clarify ownership of the South Valley Electric Service District's (SESD) electric distribution system.

"This legislation allows diverse energy sources to keep pace with Utah County's growing population," said Chaffetz. "This title transfer not only brings ownership clarity but it benefits the federal taxpayers and the local communities that use the system."

HR 251 transfers title on certain portions of the electric distribution system operated by SESD from the Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) to the District. This bill is supported by mayors of Spanish Fork, Santaquin, Salem, Payson, Genola, Woodland Hills, Springville, and Elk Ridge.

An identical bill (H.R. 461) passed the House in the 112th Congress by voice vote. HR 251 now moves to the Senate for consideration.
