Norton to Take SNAP Challenge: $4.50 on Food Per Day for a Week

Press Release

Date: June 12, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

The office of Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) announced that Norton will shop with other members of Congress at the Safeway on 14th Street SE today from 11:00 a.m. to noon, for the SNAP Challenge. Norton will take the challenge between June 13 and 19, 2013, to call attention to the impact of any further reductions in funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), or food stamps, as it faces over $20 billion in cuts in the House Republican proposed farm bill reauthorization. A House vote on the bill is expected later this month. Norton and her colleagues will search the aisles at Safeway, to spend $31.50 on food and drink to last one week, or $4.50 per day.

"Based on my past experience with the SNAP Challenge it is not easy to eat on $31.50 a week, but it is a small price to pay for members of Congress to try to make our Republican colleagues understand the cost to kids and adults who have no other resources," said Norton.
