Congressman Rubén Hinojosa Issues Statement Condemning Passage of Republican's "King Amendment" that Oens Door for Deportation of Young American Immigrants and Immigrant Military Spouses

Statement

Date: June 6, 2013
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Immigration

"Today House Republicans, in a nearly unanimous vote, showed just how uncompassionate they can be when it comes to the issue of immigrants living in the United States of America.

The Republican supported King Amendment to the Fiscal Year 2014 Homeland Security Appropriations Bill is a stark reminder of Republican opposition to commonsense immigration reform policies.

Though this will likely not make its way to the President's desk, we must always remember that many Republicans appear more interested in expressing their animosity towards President Barack Obama and his policies than in protecting young American immigrants and military spouses from deportation. The American people have consistently rejected the mass deportation of young people who were raised in this country and have urged Democrats and Republicans to come together to develop a sensible, comprehensive immigration reform proposal.

I will continue to focus my efforts on working with the bipartisan coalitions in the House and Senate on developing a legislative solution to our broken immigration system. I call on Republicans to work with Democrats rather than support these shameful amendments that demonize our immigrant community."
