Rep. Bill Owens Highlights Job Creation Opportunities at Canadian American Business Council

This week, Congressman Bill Owens spoke at the Annual Spring Policy Forum of the Canadian American Business Council (CABC) to discuss the resurgence of North American manufacturing, the importance of cross-border trade and the strong economic relationship between the United States and Canada. The Congressman emphasized the ongoing work happening through the "Beyond the Border Action Plan" and the "Regulatory Cooperation Council" as an example of emerging opportunities for job creation in border communities.
"The relationship between the U.S. and Canada is a success story for communities along the northern border," Congressman Owens said following his remarks before the CABC. "Part of the role of elected officials along the border is to tell that story to help ensure northern border issues are given the attention they deserve. I was pleased to highlight the good work that is happening in New York to drive cross-border trade and look forward to continued efforts in this regard."
Congressman Owens underscored the importance of Canada's proximity to his district, including a $1.6 billion economic impact in Clinton County alone, and his continued work to oppose new "border fees." In addition, the Congressman discussed North American competitiveness in the global market and the need for continued cooperation between the U.S. and Canada.
"This can be a North American century for job creation," Owens said. "We have a skilled workforce, falling energy costs and a clear opportunity for companies to serve a large consumer market. There's no reason we can't entice new job growth, and our continued cooperation with Canada is critical part of making that happen."
Owens was selected for the panel in part because of his role as Co-Chairman of the House Northern Border Caucus. Congressman Owens' panel also included Representative Bill Huizenga, a Republican Congressman from Michigan who sits on the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Monetary Policy & Trade. The event was held at the Embassy of Canada in Washington, DC.
