Blackburn Promotes Energy and Economy Development with Keystone XL

Statement

Congressman Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) today issued the following statement on House passage of H.R. 3, The Northern Route Approval Act. Blackburn is a co-sponsor of this legislation, which clears the way for the construction of the Keystone XL Pipeline.

Once completed, the Keystone XL Pipeline will be able to transport upwards of 830,000 barrels of oil per day which is approximately half the amount that the United States imports from the Middle East. In addition, the pipeline will create at least 20,000 direct jobs and 118,000 jobs during the life of its operation.

"It's been nearly five years since the initial Keystone XL Pipeline application was filed with the State Department. Yet, President Obama still refuses to move forward on a project that is an economic slam dunk for America," Blackburn said. "My constituents want to know what this administration has against expanding energy production. More American energy means more American jobs. We all know that is true.

"Additionally, this constant waiting game that the President is playing in delaying a decision is not only a sign of the malfunction regarding the President's energy policies but is also giving the Chinese an opportunity to access this rich oil supply in Canada.

"A report from the Department of Energy estimates that the increased energy supplies and gains in energy efficiency could essentially eliminate U.S. dependence on Middle East oil. This pipeline could tip the global oil market's balance of power in North America's favor, taking back this power from politically unstable regions of the world."
