DeLauro: FDA Needs To Stop Stalling On Food Safety Implementation

Statement

Date: April 24, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) released the following statement today on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)'s announcement they are once again delaying the close of the comment period for two-already overdue food safety rules intended to prevent foodborne illness and required by the Food Safety Modernization Act. The first delay occurred on February 15 and was supposed to last until May 16. More information about the rules can be found here.

"These overdue rules, along with the others still delayed, must be finalized and implemented to better ensure the safety of our food. Time and again, I have asked this to be done in a robust, timely fashion. Unfortunately, special interests are still winning and American consumers are losing as we all wait for a law signed more than two years ago to finally go into effect. American families deserve better and I will question Commissioner Hamburg closely about this when she testifies before Congress this Friday."
