Statement

Date: April 26, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congresswoman Karen Bass (D-Calif.), Ranking Member of the House Subcommittee on Africa released the following statement on the United Nations Security Council's unanimous vote to establish a peacekeeping force for Mali:

"I am pleased that the U.N. moved to establish a peacekeeping force in Mali. This is a very positive development in helping to restore democracy in the country and to support the upcoming Presidential and legislative elections set for July. Additionally, these forces will play a critical role to preserve the rule of law."

"I'm hopeful these forces can rise to the challenge of renewing peace and stability throughout Mali but in particular in the country's North where instability and conflict has led to increased attacks of on African led troops and the civilian population. With yesterday's announcement, Mali will have additional support in returning to the path of democracy and ensuring a brighter future for its people."
