On April 7, 2013, Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY) commemorated the Holocaust and issued the following statement:

"As we take time to remember the six million Jews who died in the most systematic genocide the world has ever seen, we must renew our determination to remain vigilant against those who preach hatred and intolerance. We must acknowledge that the Nazis who wanted to destroy every Jew came alarmingly close to achieving their "Final Solution.'

"Just as we can never forget the millions who suffered under the Nazis, we must never ignore the vicious words and actions of their spiritual heirs: the Iranians who call for Israel to be wiped off the map and are developing nuclear weapons which would allow them to do so, the Cambodian communists who murdered millions in the killing fields, the Hutus who slaughtered Tutsis in Rwanda, the ethnic Arabs who starved and killed millions of ethnic Africans in Darfur, the Indonesians who massacred tens of thousands in East Timor and an unfortunate list that continues to expand.

The only remedy for hatred is understanding. The Holocaust showed the world that intolerance can give rise to genocide; hopefully greater awareness and tolerance can give rise to greater understanding and acceptance of those who are different from ourselves."
