Rep. Paul Cook Applauds Post Office Decision to Maintain Saturday Mail Delivery

Statement

Rep. Paul Cook (R-Yucca Valley) issued the following statement in response to the U.S. Postal Service's decision to maintain Saturday mail delivery, rather than end service in August as previously planned:

"I'm pleased to see that the Postal Service will continue to provide six-day mail delivery. In a large rural district like mine, people still rely heavily on the Postal Service for a variety of reasons, including delivery of medications. And for many, it's their main means of communication. Continuing Saturday service will mean their packages and mail will be delivered on time."

Cook and other lawmakers approved budget language in March which required six-day delivery. Bowing to the congressional mandate, the Postal Service agency's board of governors directed Postmaster General Patrick R. Donahoe to continue delivery of first-class mail Mondays through Saturdays. Donahue stated that the postal service would now pursue other avenues in its effort to stem massive financial losses.

In addition to approving budget language requiring six-day delivery, Cook took separate legislative action by co-sponsoring H. Res. 30, which urged the U.S. Postal Service to "take all appropriate measures to ensure the continuation of its 6-day mail delivery service."
