Huntington News - Rahall, Capito and McKinley Introduce Resolution to Honor Sesquicentennial of West Virginia's Statehood

Representatives Nick Rahall (WV-03), Shelley Moore Capito (WV-02), and David McKinley (WV-01) released the following statement after submitting a resolution honoring the sesquicentennial of West Virginia's statehood.

"With 150 years of history to celebrate, we all can take pride in the hard work, faith in the Almighty and well placed love for our State, generations of West Virginians have invested in the Mountain State. While it is true roots run deep in our Hills, we are the first to welcome new neighbors, like the Boy Scouts of America," said Rahall. "We may have been born of the Civil War and famous for the Hatfield-McCoy Feud, but we come together in times trouble and tragedy. That strength serves our Nation and us well with both challenges and opportunities; that strength and King Coal fueled a Nation, and that is why I know our future is bright in West, by God, Virginia. I look forward to working with my colleagues, Representatives Capito and McKinley, as we ask Congress to recognize this historical benchmark of the Union's 35th beautiful and bountiful State.

"I was born and raised in the great state of West Virginia," said Capito. "It is where my husband and I raised our three children and it is the place that I am proud to call home. From its beautiful mountains to its rich history, West Virginia has a strong heritage and an even brighter future. That is why I am proud to introduce a resolution honoring 150 years of West Virginia's statehood. I have had the distinct honor to represent the great people of West Virginia, and I will continue to fight for the state that I love and honor its history."

"As a seventh generation West Virginian, I am proud to honor the Sesquicentennial West Virginia's Statehood this year," said McKinley. "I'm honored to serve the state which I love. Being a West Virginian comes with great honor, tradition and pride. In concert with the restored state of Virginia, President Lincoln, on April 20, 1863, proclaimed that West Virginia would be admitted to the United States as a separate state. Sixty days later On June 20, 1863, West Virginia became a member of the Union, the only state created during the War Between the States. This year, millions of people will travel the country roads of our great state and view the beautiful, scenic mountains to the Shenandoah River and everything in between during this special celebration. I hope everyone enjoys this time honored tradition of West Virginia Day and celebrates our wild and wonderful mountain home."
