In Case You Missed It

Statement

Date: April 8, 2013

Thursday night, we had a standing room only crowd at our town hall meeting in Olive Branch. The folks present asked great questions on a range of issues and were obviously enthusiastic about participating in the discussion. Mississippians know we cannot afford to keep spending money we do not have not only because of the damage it will do to future generations, but also the damage it is doing to the present.

Above all, people wanted to make sure I knew they were sick and tired of the weak economy, out of control spending, and unaccountable actions by the Obama Administration. My message to the folks in the room was simple: the House Republicans hear you and take our job as the last line of defense against President Obama's unrestrained liberal agenda very seriously. We are advancing legislation that addresses your concerns, including a responsible budget that balances without raising taxes. We will continue to focus on improving the economy, controlling spending and holding the Obama administration's feet to the fire.

Obamacare was also discussed. I support the full repeal of Obamacare. Every promise made when they passed it has been broken. We were told premiums would go down by $2,500, they have gone up instead. We were told if you like your health insurance, you could keep it. Thousands of Americans have already found out that is false, and millions more will in the coming years. Furthermore, government bureaucrats should not make health care decisions for you, and neither should insurance company accountants. I support replacing Obamacare with a system that puts patients and their doctors in charge of health care decisions.

Another topic people wanted to hear about was immigration. Our immigration system is broken and fixing it must begin with border security. We also need to address the problem of illegal employment, which is why I support expanding the use of e-verify so businesses can know whether or not the person they are hiring is in the country legally.

We had a healthy discussion about gun control. As long as I represent you in Congress, I will defend the 2nd Amendment right to keep and bear arms. There are plenty of laws on the books to keep guns out of the hands of criminals, we should ensure these laws are being enforced and strengthened. However, the House will not pass politically driven bills that do nothing but restrict the rights of law abiding gun owners, no matter how much President Obama and Nancy Pelosi want us to.

Thank you to all who came out to the town hall. It was a wonderful event and to those who could not make it, I hope to see you at the next one. As always, you can contact me via our website, follow me on twitter, and like my facebook page for up to the minute information on what is happening in D.C.

Stay in touch and God bless
