Statement from Congressman Pete Gallego on Immigration Demonstrations

Statement

Date: April 10, 2013
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Immigration

Congressman Pete Gallego (TX-23) released the following statement regarding the demonstrations across the country in support of immigration reform:

"The more people that pledge allegiance to our flag - the stronger that our nation becomes.

Today, in nearly every state across the country- mothers, daughters, sisters, and brothers are united in support of comprehensive immigration reform.

Current immigration laws have neither kept up with the economic realities of our country nor with public opinion. Sixty three percent of Americans and even a majority of Republicans support a path to citizenship.

The time has come to pass a reform that deals with the millions of undocumented people who are already living in this country. These include the children who go to school with our kids, the folks who sit with us in church, the people who help in our food supply, and the families that live in our neighborhoods. That reform must include a path to citizenship.

I'm hopeful that common-sense solutions can prevail, and that immigration reform with a path to citizenship will be enacted this year. Our country is counting on it."

Congressman Pete Gallego (TX-23) represents a district that runs along 800 miles of the U.S. - Mexico border. No other congressional district in the country shares a larger border with Mexico. The Eagle Pass, Del Rio, Presidio, and Fabens Port of Entry are in CD 23. Prior to representing CD23, Pete Gallego represented House District 74 in the Texas House, which contains over half of the Texas/Mexico border.
