Chairman McKeon Statement on House Republican Budget

Statement

Date: March 12, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Howard P. "Buck" McKeon, Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, made the following statement regarding the official House Republican Budget:

"To budget is to govern. Chairman Ryan was able to craft a budget that restores balance over ten years, provides needed resources to national security, and reforms unsustainable entitlement programs. In contrast, President Obama's budget is more than a month late and we have at least a month to go before the White House will even begin to outline their plans. No one doubts that these are challenging times, but it is nonetheless disturbing that the President has, for the fourth year in a row, failed to met a budget deadline set by law.

"While we wait on the President, and federal spending spirals out of control, I'm grateful to Chairman Ryan for a serious legislative solution to our economic woes and massive deficit. Most importantly, this budget shields our troops from further damage under sequestration, which represents the third cut to our military in the President's four years in office. With national security accounting for 18% of our spending, and shouldering an astonishing 50% of deficit reduction to date, I'm heartened to see a proposal that finally offers the troops some relief.

"I look forward to the floor debate and the opportunity to vote on this badly needed legislation."
