Rep. Miller Statement on House-Passed Responsible Federal Spending Measure

U.S. Representative Candice Miller (MI-10) today made the following statement on the passage of H.R.933, the Continuing Resolution (CR) to prevent a government shutdown and continue government operations until the end of the fiscal year on September 30, 2013 while maintaining the sequestration cuts level required by the President's sequestration order. Included in this legislation is a provision providing the flexibility needed for the U.S. Customs and Border Protection to maintain current staffing levels. Miller said:
"I am glad that this legislation which will help avoid a government shutdown on March 27th has passed the House and is now on its way to the Senate. This bill made important changes to prioritize funding for the men and women of our armed forces, Veterans programs and provides President Obama and our military commanders the flexibility they need to keep this nation safe and secure while keeping in place needed reductions in spending. In addition, the legislation provides the Customs and Border Protection the flexibility to maintain current staffing levels to fulfill their mission of protecting our nation's ports of entry.
"This is a responsible plan that keeps spending under control and paves the way for our nation's economy to grow and create jobs, but far more remains to be done. This is a step forward and I hope the Senate will join the House in swiftly passing this bill and send it President Obama's desk so that the American people will not needlessly be forced against another arbitrary deadline under threat of an unnecessary government shutdown."
Note: H.R.933 includes a full-year Defense Appropriations bill, as well as a full-year Military Construction/Veterans Affairs Appropriations bill. These two individual bills passed the House last year on a broad bipartisan basis, and have been negotiated by both the House and Senate. Except for the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs, the CR will provide funding for other government agencies at last year's levels, maintaining the sequestration cuts level required by the President's sequestration order.
