Rep Walberg Supports Job Training Bill

Today, Rep Walberg voted in favor of H.R. 803, the Supporting Knowledge and Investing in Lifelong Skills (SKILLS) Act. The legislation would reform the nation's workforce development system and better equip job-seekers with the skills they need for today's economy.

"The programs and reforms addressed in the SKILLS Act are important in helping both Michigan and our nation develop its workforce. The legislation will save taxpayer dollars and create a more effective and efficient system in helping put Americans back to work," commented Rep Walberg following the vote.

Reforms addressed in the SKILLS Act include:

· Eliminates roadblocks that prevent workers from accessing job training immediately

· Helps ensure support is tailored to the specific needs of individual workers

· Requires state and local leaders to use a set of common performance measures for services offered to workers, improving accountability and protecting taxpayer dollars.

· Creates a flexible Workforce Investment Fund to serve as a single source of support for workers, employers, and job seekers

· Eliminates and streamlines 35 ineffective and duplicative programs, including 26 identified in a 2011 report by the nonpartisan Government Accountability Office.
