Rep. Hudson Votes for Historic Spending Cut

Statement

U.S. Representative Richard Hudson (NC-08) released the following statement Wednesday after casting a Yes vote on H.R. 933, a bill that would fund the federal government for the remainder of the fiscal year:

"We have a spending crisis in our country, and today, the House passed historic spending cuts that immediately reduce Washington's unprecedented debt levels. The Continuing Resolution that I supported secures the largest spending cut in history, rolling us back to 2008 levels. This is only a first step towards our goal of balancing the budget in 10 years. We are just beginning our work to reduce our debt and create an atmosphere that fosters economic growth and job creation.

"What we were able to achieve with this measure in addition to these historic cuts is the ability to restore some of the damage done to our military to ensure our troops are prepared and our nation remains strong and secure. Today's vote was also a partial defunding of Obamacare. It forces agencies to operate at pre-Obamacare levels, making it harder for agencies to put resources towards implementing this costly and devastating healthcare overhaul."

The Continuing Resolution (CR) prevents a government shutdown and funds all government operations until the end of the year. The CR represents a significant reduction in spending levels, bringing the top-line overall rate of spending in the CR down to approximately $984 billion, including $85 billion in real cuts this year. The Defense portion of the legislation includes funding for critical national security needs, and provides flexibility to the Pentagon to cut waste and preserve funding for necessary functions like training.
