Bonamici: Congress Has Responsibility to Act on President's Gun Violence Prevention Proposal

Statement

Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR) today released the following statement on President Obama's gun violence prevention recommendations.

"I applaud President Obama and Vice President Biden's diligent work and study on the issue of gun violence in American society. The recommendations they announced today represent an important starting point in this national debate. The President will take several executive actions to address lax regulations, limited enforcement, and criminal actions perpetrated by the very worst in our society - all of which will help reduce the number of innocent victims in the future.

"But the executive actions are not enough; Congress also has a responsibility to reduce gun violence. The legislative proposals to require universal background checks, limit the capacity of assault magazines, ban assault weapons designed for killing, strengthen our national gun trafficking laws, improve gun violence prevention education, and address the limitations of our mental health care system have my support and must be considered immediately.

"Oregonians are tired of the mass murders and daily killings that have become far too common in America. Our children deserve a country that puts their safety first. As parents, policymakers, and adults, it is our job to protect our kids. I intend to do everything I can to fulfill that obligation."
