Boustany Continues to Favor Spending Cuts Over Tax Increases

Statement

Congressman Charles W. Boustany, Jr. M.D. (R-South Louisiana) issued the following statement after voting against tax increases included in the so-called "fiscal cliff deal":

"Last night, Washington voted to raise income tax rates for the first time in over two decades. I voted against this bill due to its fundamental failure to address one of the biggest problems facing our nation today: government spending. To the contrary, this legislation is comprised mainly of tax increases. According to the non-partisan Tax Policy Center, more than 75% of American households will see a tax increase from last year. This Administration continues to spend away our nation's future with this legislation doing nothing to stop it.

"President Obama promised to cut deficits in half by the end of his first term in office. With 18 days remaining in his first term, this bill adds $4 trillion in new deficit spending. Coupled with the $16 trillion national debt, the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 provides a recipe for disaster.

"I promised to not raise taxes on American families, and I intend to do everything possible to keep that promise. I voted against this tax increase in favor of reigning in Washington's spending. Americans are tired of gimmicks and need to see real reform. This bill does not provide it."
