Statement

Date: Dec. 20, 2012
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Veterans

Sen. Mike Johanns (R-Neb.) today issued the following statement after the Department of Veterans' Affairs (VA) announced the purchase of land for a new national cemetery at South 144th Street (Highway 50) and Schram Road in Sarpy County. The cemetery will serve veterans in eastern Nebraska, western Iowa and northwest Missouri.

"The announcement of a new site for a national cemetery in Sarpy County has great significance for our veterans and their families. Getting this project started has been a priority of mine, and I am happy to see it moving forward," Johanns said. "This cemetery will provide Nebraskans, and all Americans who come to visit it, a place to honor those who have protected our country. Our veterans are American heroes and should be remembered every day we exercise the freedoms they fought to preserve."

The VA plans to award a design contract for the cemetery early next year.
