California should follow the example of other states that have banned fundraising by legislators while the Legislature is in active session. On any given day in Sacramento, legislators consider bills written by lobbyists in the morning, then cross the street at lunch to raise money from those same lobbyists. It's time to stop this shameless practice and get Legislators focused on the public interest while in session. Marc would also sponsor ethics reform that, among other things, would prohibit legislative staffers and members of various public boards from serving as paid lobbyists -- closing off an outrageous loophole in current ethics rules. Marc also supports tightening rules on independent expenditure campaigns to keep the public informed about who is using big money to influence California elections. He has already successfully implemented equivalent reform at the local level, by recently helping pass a law in San Rafael to increase transparency and disclosure around independent expenditure committees.
