Udall Bullish on Equality as U.S. Supreme Court Takes Up Defense of Marriage Act, Proposition 8

Press Release

Date: Dec. 7, 2012

Mark Udall issued the following statement on the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to consider the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act and California's Proposition 8 -- both misguided laws that, respectively, prohibit the federal government from recognizing the lawful marriages of gay couples in states all across the country and a state constitutional provision that defines marriage as between "a man and a woman."

"It is my hope, as the Supreme Court takes up the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act and California's Proposition 8, that it makes the right call to reverse discrimination against committed, married gay couples, " Udall said. "Our laws should not treat the loving commitment of one marriage differently from another -- that is contrary to who we are as Americans."

Udall has been a vocal supporter of marriage equality and lauded a recent court decision striking down the Defense of Marriage Act. Earlier this year, Udall welcomed President Obama's support for marriage equality.
