KOHL, BALDWIN ANNOUNCE $150,000 FOR UW-WHITEWATER CENTER FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES

WASHINGTON-U.S. Senator Herb Kohl and Rep. Tammy Baldwin announced today that they secured $150,000 for the Center for Students with Disabilities at UW-Whitewater to establish a program to meet the needs of students with severe and persistent mental health needs. The funding is included in the fiscal year 2005 omnibus budget, which Congress approved this weekend. Kohl is a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee and its Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education, and had identified the project as a priority for funding. Baldwin fought for the funding in the House of Representatives.

"Every American should have the opportunity to seek a quality education and hold a good job," Kohl said. "The UW-Whitewater Center for Students with Disabilities remains committed to that ideal, and is working hard to make it a reality for its students. The Center's new program will have a positive impact on not only the students it serves, but also the community as a whole," Kohl said.

"The creation of this Center will benefit not only the students it serves, but also our entire community. Quality education leads to good jobs, a stronger economy and an opportunity for all to reach their full potential. I applaud UW-Whitewater for establishing this program and am delighted that Senator Kohl and I were successful in securing federal funds for this effort," said Baldwin.
